Automatic Pill Dispenser Comparison: LiviPod vs the Alternatives

Source-verified comparisons. Every competitor figure on this page is taken only from that company's own published pages, linked, and dated with the day it was checked. Where a company's own pages disagree with each other, we show both versions instead of picking one.

LiviPod is an automatic pill dispenser you buy once and own: $293.00 for a 3 Pod Starter Set, with no subscription and no monthly fee. Hero Health is subscription only, $29.99 to $59.99 per month across three plans, which comes to $1,439.64 to $2,159.64 over three years, and the dispenser stays Hero's property. MedaCube's unit is $2,299.00 to $2,499.00. LiveFine's carousel dispensers are filled by hand, one dose at a time. Each comparison links to the competitor's own published pages so you can read the source yourself.

The detailed tables on this page compare LiviPod and Hero Health. For MedaCube, see the LiviPod vs MedaCube comparison. For LiveFine, see the LiviPod vs LiveFine comparison.

The LiviPod system. Each pod holds one pill type.

Part 1. Dispensers where nobody sorts pills

LiviPod, Hero Health and MedaCube are loaded in bulk. Pills go in by type, not by dose, so nobody sorts them into daily slots. The comparison tables directly below cover this group. Dispensers where pills are sorted into dose slots are compared in Part 2 further down this page.

What three years actually costs

LiviPods are a single payment. Hero publishes three plans, from $29.99 to $59.99 per month, and keeps charging for as long as you use it.

Where LiviPods pull ahead

  • 3 pods cost less than a year of any Hero plan. The 3 Pod Starter Set is $293.00. Hero's first year is $359.88 prepaid, $539.88 on the 12-month commitment, or $719.88 with no commitment. Hero bills the prepaid plan as $359.88 at checkout, so the 3 pod set costs less from day one.
  • 3 pods pay for themselves in months, not years. $293.00 divided by $59.99 is 4.9 months against Flexible Monthly. $293.00 divided by $44.99 is 6.5 months against the 12-month commitment.
  • 10 pods catch up with the monthly plans in under two years. Hero's running total passes $916.00 in month 16 on Flexible Monthly ($959.84) and in month 21 on the 12-month commitment ($944.79).
  • Over three years, 10 pods cost $916.00. Hero costs $1,439.64 to $2,159.64 over the same three years, and keeps going.

Cost per medication

The number that decides whether a dispenser is worth it is what each medication you actually take ends up costing you. Hero's price does not move with that number, and neither does MedaCube's. LiviPods are priced by the pod, so what you pay tracks what you actually take.

Cost per medication: the three year total divided by the medications you take. Checked October 7, 2026.
Medications you take LiviPod, bought once Our product Hero Flexible Monthly, $59.99 per month Hero Annual, billed monthly, $44.99 per month Hero Annual, prepaid, $359.88 up front MedaCube, bought once
3 medications $97.67 each $719.88 each $539.88 each $479.88 each $833.00 each
5 medications $94.20 each $431.93 each $323.93 each $287.93 each $499.80 each
10 medications $91.60 each $215.96 each $161.96 each $143.96 each $249.90 each
Three year total $293.00 for 3 pods, $916.00 for 10 $2,159.64 $1,619.64 $1,439.64 $2,499.00

LiviPod uses the 3 Pod Starter Set, 5 pods and 10 pods ($293.00, $471.00, $916.00). MedaCube uses its $2,499.00 listing.

Over three years, LiviPods cost less per medication than every Hero plan at three, five and ten medications. At ten medications the 10 pod system works out to $91.60 per medication against $143.96 on Hero's prepaid plan, $161.96 on the 12-month commitment and $215.96 with no commitment, which is $52.36, $70.36 and $124.36 less per medication.

No device programming, no weekly sorting

There are no controls on the pod. Nothing to set, no clock to advance, no button sequences to memorize. Tap the app to set up a new schedule or change an existing one in under 15 seconds. You pour each pill type loose from the bottle into its own pod, so there is no weekly pill sorting. A pod glows when a dose is ready, and your phone sounds a Custom Alert Tone.

LiviPod Fit Kit inserts used to size a pod to a specific pill
The Fit Kit sizes a pod to a specific pill. One time per pod, included with every Starter Set.

Part 2. Dispensers where pills are sorted into dose slots

These dispensers hold one dose per slot. Every pill in that dose shares the slot, and someone fills every slot by hand at the start of each cycle, or a pharmacy does it for you. That is the work Part 1 dispensers remove. All figures below were checked October 14, 2026, except LiveFine, which was checked October 7, 2026.

How long one fill lasts

A slot dispenser runs out when its slots do, so the number of doses per day decides how often someone refills it. At the highest frequency each company publishes:

  • MedReady: 28 doses divided by 4 doses a day = 7 days (MedReady 1700).
  • MOBI: 28 slots divided by 9 releases a day = 3.1 days (MOBI support FAQ).
  • MedMinder: one tray covers one to four weeks (MedMinder).
  • LiveFine: their own guide publishes 28 days at one dose a day and 3 days at nine doses a day. See the LiviPod vs LiveFine comparison.

What a monthly fee adds over three years

  • MedReady 1700, no monitoring: $149.00, nothing further (MedReady 1700).
  • MedReady 1750, landline monitored: $196.00 + ($16.00 x 36) = $196.00 + $576.00 = $772.00 (MedReady monitoring).
  • e-pill MedSmart: $589.95 or $489.95, depending on which of their pages you read, with no monthly fee (e-pill MedSmart, e-pill compare).
  • MOBI: $149.99, no monthly fee published for the dispenser (MOBI product page).
  • MedMinder: cannot be calculated, because neither the device price nor the monthly fee is published.

Common questions

Does Hero Health require a subscription?

Yes. Hero Health is subscription only, with three plans from $29.99 to $59.99 per month: Flexible Monthly at $59.99 with no commitment, Annual billed monthly at $44.99 on a 12 month commitment, and Annual prepaid at $29.99 a month equivalent, billed as $359.88 up front. Annual plans renew at the then-current Annual, billed monthly rate, currently $44.99 a month, so over three years the plans total $2,159.64, $1,619.64 and $1,439.64 before sales tax. The dispenser remains Hero's property.

What happens to the dispenser if I stop paying Hero Health?

Hero states "If you cancel, your Hero smart dispenser will stop working." The warranty ends with the subscription, because Hero's warranty runs for the duration of the subscription term. The dispenser then has to be returned within 30 days after the subscription ends, and Hero's Terms of Use set the Non-Returned Dispenser Fee at $1,500 for a dispenser if it is not returned in that window. Paying that fee does not buy the unit. Canceling in the middle of a commitment does not avoid charges already due for the current term.

Is there an automatic pill dispenser with no monthly fee?

Yes. LiviPod is bought once and owned outright, starting at $293.00 for a 3 Pod Starter Set. There is no subscription, no monthly fee and no cancellation fee, and the app is free.

Can an automatic pill dispenser handle soft gels and gel caps?

The LiviPod system supports whole tablets, capsules and caplets, plus soft gels and gel caps including vitamin E type caplets, and the app tracks an unlimited number of medications kept outside the pods. Hero Health's product page says it supports any pill size or shape, but Hero's own support site lists liquids, gel-caps, dissolving pills and gummies among medications that should be stored outside the dispenser, and Hero's manual (version 3.2, October 2025) highly recommends storing soft gel caps outside the device as well.

Is MedaCube a subscription, and how much does it cost?

MedaCube is not a subscription. The MedaCube 2.0 is $2,299.00 to $2,499.00 on its two listings with a 1 year limited warranty, or $2,699.00 to $2,899.00 with a 2 year comprehensive warranty. An optional cell modem adds $30.00 per month plus a $99.00 activation fee, for homes with no Wi-Fi. A LiviPod 3 Pod Starter Set is $293.00 one time, and a 10 pod system is $916.00 one time. Full detail is on the LiviPod vs MedaCube comparison.

Does LiviPod need programming?

No. There are no controls on the pod, no clock to set and no button sequences. You tap the app to set up a new schedule or change one in under 15 seconds. There is one setup step, sizing each pod to its pill with the Fit Kit, done once per pod and valid for as long as you keep using the same pill.
